Golden Rules of Google Search:
  1. Google queries are not caSe sEnSitiVe
  2. Google wildcard character is the "*" character, but it doesn't work the way you might think. It will not stem. Instead, it will substitute for a word.
  3. Google stems automatically. (e.g., enter "diet" and get "dietary" as well.
  4. Google has "stop words" which are normally ignored in queries. Some stop words are who, where, what, the , a, or am (but this can vary from search to search).
  5. There used to be a 10-word limit on searches. The limit is higher now, but if you encounter that limit, use the wildcard character to reduce the word count. Example)
Basic search: FBI hacker Mitnick
Phrase search: "The Cremation of Sam McGee"

Boolean operators:
  1. The AND operator is redundant. Google AND's the words by default.
  2. Use the "+" character to ensure a word is included in the search. Example: +the cry +of distress +is +the summons +to relief
  3. The NOT operator works, but you invoke it differently. You preface the NOT'ed word with the "-" character, as on -pledge "and justice for all". Don't use the NOT word because you will look for "not" and the word you don't want, as in NOT pledge "and justice for all"
  4. The "OR" operator also works. You can use "OR" (uppercase) or the "|" character to invoke it.
  5. Note, there is no order of operation with Google (but the order of the words may affect the results of the query. Example
  6. Use of parenthasis is permitted (but the presence of paraenthasis does not affect the search).
Toolbars:
  1. Google API Search Tool (Windows)
  2. Ultrabar (for Internet Explorer)
  3. Google's IE Toolbar
  4. Dave's Quick Search Taskbar (launch your browser with your search term)
